My biggest frustration with Instagram Reels is how BUGGY they are within the app. Since switching over to filming on my native phone app and editing in InShot, I have saved myself houuuuurrs of frustration and I highly recommend you do the same!

  1. Do all of your filming in your main camera app. That way, you won’t lose your footage if Instagram glitches and deletes your drafts.
  2. Use InShot for editing. I highly recommend the paid version — it’s well worth it if you’re a business owner experimenting with reels (and you can cancel the subscription anytime if you decide it’s not for you!)
  3. As soon as you take a video, jot down the title or pull it right into the editing app so you don’t have to weed through all of your footage when it’s time to post a video! Clean out your phone on a very regular basis.

Okay, now that we’ve got the basics out of the way let’s get down to the nitty gritty on editing:

Zero fluff

Did you take a breath? Reach out to hit the record button? Say “um?” Every second is a premium second in reels, so trim it out.

Use haptic feedback

Rather than recording one long segment, tackle one bullet point at a time. There are two advantages to this: (1) you’ll be able to regroup often so no need to memorize an entire script; and (2) you’ll get haptic feedback when editing your text and it’ll be about a million times easier to get the timing exactly right.

Mix up your angles

Even if it’s something as simple as taking one step forward or back between bullet points, mixing up your visuals goes a long ways in keeping your viewer engaged and interested in your video… and that’s gold for your watch time & the reach of your video!

Don’t make it complicated!

Your third reel doesn’t have to have transitions or a funny story line — start where you are, and build your skills as you go. It’s so much less overwhelming and you’ll be surprised how quick you get there when there’s no pressure to make it perfect. Have fun!
